EquipmentTIP: Do a test to ensure that the base you are painting with matches the base of the paint on the wall. The test is verry easy: Wet your hand, touch the wall, if the water penetrates the wall, it is a waterbase because it is poruis, if the water stays behind and are visable, it is a enamel base that are not poruis. Apply Magic Velvet in two layers with a 24 hour drying time between each layer to enamel wall. Use a Mohair roller to apply this paint. Read more on this product on the Universal Undercoat Page. Brushes: You do not need special equipment to paint interior walls and ceilings. If you want to paint with only a brush, you would require 2 brushes - a narrow (for finishing corners and finishing) and a wider brush (for the painting of the larger area). Rollers: It is easier to cover larger areas with a roller, but you will still require a narrow brush to do the finishing with. New imitation wool rollers should be soaked in soap water for 2 - 3 hours to remove all loose hairs. Roll dry against an outer wall before use. The best roller to use is a sheepskin Roller as it saves time and money in the long run. Other items: Pan for the roller ( put pan into a shopping bag where you poure the paint onto the shopping bag for easy cleaning and easy change of colours. . A ladder or other sturdy piece of equipment to stand on to reach the higher spots or the ceiling. Before you paint:Cover the entire floor with Dropsheets that are reusable and economical or plastic. All items in the room should be covered, to avoid spillage onto them. If it is at all possible all painting should be done in daylight. In artificial light you cannot always see exactly what you are doing, and could miss spots. Always paint from top to bottom, the ceilings should thus be painted before the walls. MethodUse a brush to paint a 50mm strip along the wall corners and any edges. Using a roller for this application would not work, as the roller cannot reach the corners. Pour some paint into a rollertray. DO NOT pour in too much, as this would cause the roller to be overladen and create spillage. Dip the roller in the paint and roll it back, making sure that excess paint is removed from the roller. Paint a strip covering the corner strip that was painted with the brush. Paint a second strip, a bit narrower than the roller next to the first strip. Cover the gap that step 4 left. Finish by working over both strips. Paint the next strip, and then cover the gap (repeating steps 4 and 5). Repeat until the whole wall has been covered. |
