CeilingsProduct ApplicationWritten by Koos Vermeulen - Before applying paint to any surface, ensure that the surface is clean (no oily residue) and dust free. If no damage does exist wash surface with liquid soap and water. Allow 4 hours to dry completely. CeilingsPaint sequence 1 & 2. Paint the ceiling in strips of 1 (one) meter. If you are right handed, work from right to left. If you are left handed, work from left to right. Apply two coats with a drying time of 12 hours between each coat. Ensure that you do not apply a water based acrylic PVA over an Gloss Enamel. Do a test by wetting your hand with water, put hand on ceiling, if water penetrates into paint it is a water base, if it is still visable it is a Enamel base. Follow the next steps if it is a enamel base: Sand ceiling thoroughly untill it is coarse and poruis. Wash with a clean turpentine cloth. Apply Universal Undercoat Magic Velvet in two layers with a 24 hour drying time between each coat. A water based PVA can be applied over Magic Velvet later on as required.
EquipmentBrushes: You do not need special equipment to paint interior walls and ceilings. If you want to paint with only a brush, you would require 2 brushes - a narrow (for finishing corners and finishing) and a wider brush (for the painting of the larger area). Rollers: It is easier to cover larger areas with a roller, but you will still require a narrow brush to do the finishing with. New imitation wool rollers should be soaked in soap water for 2 - 3 hours to remove all loose hairs. Roll dry against an outer wall before use. The best roller to use is a Sheepskin roller or a Sheep Synthetic roller. Other items: Pan for the roller ( put the pan into a shopping bag and pour out your desirde paint onto the shopping bag. After painting is finished, simply remove the shopping bag and desperse.). A ladder or other sturdy piece of equipment to stand on to reach the higher spots or the ceiling. Before you paint:Cover the entire floor with Dropsheets or plastic. All items in the room should be covered, to avoid spillage onto them. Dropsheets can be used over and over again and are verry cost effective and cheap. If it is at all possible all painting should be done in daylight. In artificial light you cannot always see exactly what you are doing, and could miss spots. Always paint from top to bottom, the ceilings should thus be painted before the walls. MethodApply Magic Velvet to metal strips if not painted or stained, in two layers with a 24 hour drying time between each layer. Use a brush to paint a 50mm strip along the ceiling where it meets the wall. Using a roller for this application would not work, as the roller cannot reach the corners. Pour some paint into a rollertray into a shopping bag. DO NOT pour in too much, as this would cause the roller to be overladen and create spillage. Clean wall thoroughly, remove all loose particles. Paint wall on both sides with 2 coats Distemper Neutraliser if water problems persists, follow the directions on the Distemper Neutraliser page. Apply Vermillian Acrylic Double Vinel and not PVA coats in two layers over Distemper Neutraliser. Dip the roller in the paint and roll it back, making sure that excess paint is removed from the roller. Paint a strip covering the corner strip that was painted with the brush. Paint a second strip, a bit narrower than the roller next to the first strip. Cover the gap that step 4 left. Finish by working over both strips. Paint the next strip, and then cover the gap (repeating steps 4 and 5). Repeat until the whole ceiling has been covered. Apply a second coat after 12 hours drying time. If there are any stains on the ceiling cover it first with two to three layers of Magic Velvet with a 24 hour drying time between each layer. |
